The torque limiter is a wide use device, which reduces the power developed by the torque to a maximum threshold, usually set by the user, according to the specific needs of application.
It is used in all those cases where there’s need to protect the organs from mechanical overloads, machinery or moving parts.
If they have a high couple, but the organs on which applies fail to suffer it even, they should be use a device which reduces the force, avoiding damage to the mechanical parts of the system: this is the function of the torque limiter.
This device can be electronic or mechanic; in the first case is characterized by a slip clutch that starts to flow when it exceeds a given threshold limit: is the system generally used in power tools such as wrench.
Other applications of Torque Limiter
The torque limiter, then, may be used in power tools and many other tools, but has recently appeared on some high-performance cars.
There are several possible ways of adjustment: manual (typical of screwdrivers, where the user sets the maximum value that submit work), automatic (the operator can intervene on the management of the pair, whose value is set by the system itself) or fixed.
The torque limiter uses are manifold: the mechanism is not only used in electric or mechanical tools, where the screws can strip, becoming unusable, but, recently, are also used by manufacturers of high-performance cars (Mercedes-AMG is the one who most uses them).
Another typical application is the slipper clutch for motorcycle use on sportive big bikes: here the torque limiter does not adjust the positive force of the engine, but the negative resistance of the motor respect to the rotation: so you avoid much mechanical stress, but you can greatly improve the drivability of the vehicle.
